The university system and education in Australia varies according to states, as each state government is responsible for providing funding to the local universities. The states and territories in Australia are the Northern Territory, Australian Capitol Territory,Tasmania, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, and Victoria.

Each of these states and territories have its own administration on university research, and there are many world renowned research institutes in these above states. Currently in Australia, there are 41 accredited universities that conduct high-quality research.

Universities in Queensland
Queensland is home to multiple institutes that conduct university research, including the University of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland, University of the Sunshine Coast, Bond University, Queensland University of Technology, James Cook University, Griffith University, Central Queensland University, and Australian Catholic University.

Universities in Victoria
Victoria houses nine universities which conduct excellent research studies in different disciplines. Among all, the University of Melbourne and the Monash University are the most famous internationally. The other universities are Charles Sturt University, Deakin University, La Trobe University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Victoria University, University of Ballarat, and the Swinburne University of Technology.

Universities in New South Wales
A lot of major university research centers are situated in New South Wales, including the University of Wollongong, University of New England, University of New Castle, University of Sydney, University of Technology-Sydney, and the University of New South Wales.

Universities in Western Australia
Comparing to other states, Western Australia has a smaller number of institutes that conduct university research. This include Murdoch University, University of Western Australia, and the University of Notre Dame Australia.

Universities in South Australia
In addition to the extension of one U.S. and one U.K. university, South Australia is home to Flinders University, University of South Australia, and the University of Adelaide, one of the oldest universities in the country.

Universities in Tasmania
Only the University of Tasmina is located in this state.

Universities in the Australian Capitol Territory
Three major universities are situated in ACT, particularly in Canberra. These universities include the Australian Defense Force Academy, Australian National University, and the University of Canberra.

Only Charles Darwin University is located in the Northern Territory.
